In the beginning... a Blackfoot story

Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park is another place we went to on our cross Canada camping trip. Some of the information here might help those of you who are working on storytelling, oral tradition, legends, petroglyphs or landforms tasks.

Can you find where Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park is on a map? What province is it in?

This place was important to the Blackfoot Indians. Are the Blackfoot and Blackfeet Indians the same people? Where are these names used?

Can you find at least one animal that lives here that maybe we should have been a little afraid of?

The Hoodoos!!

About to explore...

We were all alone out there

Resting atop a hoodoo

Such a beautiful, peaceful place.

Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park

These landforms are called "hoodoos" by non-Indians; it sounds like their name for this place is meant to make you think this place is something that is bad or at least silly or not worth your time to see but that is completely not true. This is a very special and beautiful place. The Blackfoot knew that. If you can ever visit, make sure you do - just don't write on any of the rocks in this park. That is very disresepctful.
What is a petroglyph?

Can you find at least 3 more sites in Canada that have petroglyphs? You can use the internet if people you know don't know where they are or if there are none near you.

How many sites can you find in your province?

The beauty of using pictures to record events or other important things is that people who might speak different languages can get a message from what is depicted.

These are some images you might find on the trail. What do you think they represent?

This is found inside the interpretative centre; you can spend a lot of time in this place listening to recordings, seeing many different artifacts, medicinal plants and resting in the centre space that is set up like a tipi; we stretched out and rested on the buffalo hides there.
