Our Community

We are Mushkegowuk Cree from Moosonee, Ontario.

We are members of the Attawapiskat First Nation.

There is no highway out of our community. We have to take a train or a plane to leave town.

In the summer we get to and from Moose Factory, which is across the river from us, by boat.

While the river is freezing up or breaking up, in the spring and fall, we get back and forth to Moose Factory by helicopter (the hospital is over there).

In the winter, we drive to Moose Factory on the ice. We can also now drive south in the winter, the road takes you to Cochrane.

We can also drive north to Kashechewan, Fort Albany and Attawapiskat First Nations in the winter. Kashechewan is not on the map to the right but it is across the river from Fort Albany (sort of).

We drove to Kashechewan and Fort Albany for the first time on the winter road this Friday. Kash has a Tim Horton's and we picked up timbits & doughnuts and creamy chocolate chills!

We drove to Kashechewan First Nation last Friday. We had never done that before. Kash has a Tim Horton's at the Northern store adn we got our first creamy chocolate chills, Timbits and doughnuts of the year!

We use these boats, called freighter canoes, to travel back and forth on the river.

Waiting at the airport to go to the dentist.

Helicopters, like this one, take people to and from Moosonee and Moose Factory.

We took these pictures from our vehicle as we were trying to get home after a hockey game. The tide was high and many trucks weren't able to get over. The people getting out are trying to catch the train and getting their luggage out to the top of the hill so that they can catch a taxi.

We also like to go out on our skidoo and sled in the winter.
